CINCINNATI, OHIO - Akron defeated Xavier 3-1 on Saturday evening in a non-conference clash at the Xavier Soccer Complex. The Zips (9-3-3) controlled much of the play against the Musketeers (5-5-3) in front of 1,247 fans.

Stefan Dobrijevic opened the scoring for Akron in the 13th minute, finding the back of the net with a well-placed shot. The Zips doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute when Dobrijevic struck again, this time off an assist from Thomas O'Rourke. Xavier pulled one back through Cooper Forcellini in the 39th minute, but Remi Agunbiade restored Akron's two-goal cushion in the 60th minute after combining with Dobrijevic and Tyler Morck.

The first half saw Akron establish their dominance early. The Zips' pressure led to multiple chances, with Jack Roman forcing a save in the 4th minute. Ashton Kamdem received a yellow card in the 11th minute for an unsporting challenge, but this didn't deter Akron's aggressive approach. Xavier's Ezra Widman was also cautioned in the 27th minute as the physical nature of the match intensified.

After the break, both teams made tactical adjustments. Xavier introduced fresh legs with Johnny Gourley and Ryan D'urso entering at halftime, while Akron withdrew Farrel Ngongang and Caleb Borneo. The Musketeers showed more attacking intent, but Akron's defensive organization, anchored by Matt Dreas and Daragh Reilly, limited their opportunities. The match saw further cautions, with Tyler Morck (76th minute) and Braxton Hayes (82nd minute) entering the referee's book for Akron.

Statistically, Akron dominated the encounter, outshooting Xavier 12-6 with six shots on target compared to Xavier's three. The Zips also held a significant advantage in corner kicks (10-2), demonstrating their territorial superiority throughout the match. Both teams battled hard, with Akron collecting five yellow cards to Xavier's three.

Dobrijevic was the standout performer with his two-goal performance, while Matthew Paiva controlled the midfield for Akron with several key interceptions. Xavier's Nolan Brice made three crucial saves to keep the Musketeers in contention, while Jabari De Coteau showed flashes of brilliance in attack despite limited service.

Tactically, Akron's high-pressing system proved effective, forcing Xavier into numerous turnovers in dangerous areas. The Musketeers attempted to counter through quick transitions, but struggled to break through Akron's organized defensive structure. The introduction of Alejandro Silvestrini in the second half provided Xavier with more creativity, though they couldn't capitalize on the improved build-up play.

The victory extends Akron's unbeaten run to three matches, while Xavier's struggles continue with just one win in their last four outings. The Zips' performance demonstrated why they're among the conference's top teams, showing both attacking flair and defensive resilience.

Looking ahead, Akron returns home to face Marquette on November 1, while Xavier travels to Georgetown for a crucial conference matchup on the same date. The Zips will look to maintain their momentum, while the Musketeers must regroup quickly to keep their postseason hopes alive.
