No Contest Declared After First Half Storm Interruption

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons' men's soccer match against Maryland was cancelled at halftime Friday night due to severe weather conditions in the area, with officials declaring the contest a no-contest after 45 minutes of play.

Maryland held a 1-0 advantage when play was suspended, courtesy of Sadam Masereka's goal in the 9th minute. Masereka found the back of the net with an assist from Luca Costabile at the 8:46 mark, giving the Terrapins the only goal of the abbreviated match.

The first half saw both teams create scoring opportunities, with Wake Forest's Ryan Belal, Joel Torbic, and Basit Umar all testing Maryland goalkeeper Laurin Mack. The Demon Deacons earned multiple corner kicks but were unable to convert before the weather interruption.

Due to NCAA regulations and safety concerns surrounding the severe weather system, officials made the decision not to resume play. The match will not be rescheduled and will not count toward either team's season record.

Wake Forest will return to action Sunday evening at Spry Stadium, hosting UCF at 7 p.m. in their next scheduled contest. Maryland's next match is set for Sunday, August 25, when they travel to face Georgetown at 7:30 p.m.

Both teams will look to put this weather-shortened contest behind them as they continue their early season campaigns.
