ALLENDALE, Mich. — Grand Valley State overwhelmed Michigan Tech 6-1 on Sunday, delivering a dominant performance that underscored the Lakers' status as a regional powerhouse while exposing the Huskies' defensive vulnerabilities in NCAA Division II competition.
Sonya Mehta led the Lakers' offensive onslaught with two goals, including the opening strike in the 11th minute assisted by Alli French. Mehta added another in the 53rd minute with help from Kacy Lauer. Lauer herself scored in the 26th minute, while Ivy Wilhelm found the net in the 37th minute off Shea Douglass's assist. Alli French contributed a goal in the 48th minute, and Acadia Murphy added the sixth in the 41st minute. Karli Koskinen's 49th-minute goal provided Michigan Tech's lone bright spot, assisted by Elizabeth Striebel.
Grand Valley State controlled the first half with relentless attacking pressure. The Lakers' offensive rhythm was evident early as they dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities. Michigan Tech struggled to establish any meaningful rhythm, with goalkeeper Bri Barrows forced into constant action. By halftime, Grand Valley had established a commanding 4-0 lead, effectively deciding the match before the second half began. The Huskies' defense appeared disorganized, unable to contain the Lakers' fluid attacking movements and creative passing sequences.
The second half saw Grand Valley
