MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Mississippi Col. extended its winning streak to nine games with a 2-1 victory over Montevallo on Sunday. The visiting Choctaws, ranked among regional powerhouses with an 11-1-4 record, controlled much of the match despite playing on the road.
Lewis Matton gave Mississippi Col. an early advantage in the 6th minute, assisted by Sergio Garrido. Garrido doubled the lead in the 35th minute with an unassisted goal, putting the Choctaws firmly in control before halftime. Dominic Kienzle pulled one back for Montevallo in the 71st minute, but the hosts could not find an equalizer.
Mississippi Col. dominated shot attempts 15-11 and registered six shots on goal compared to Montevallo's five. The Choctaws' defense held firm despite conceding eight corner kicks to the home team's five. Both goalkeepers recorded four saves in an evenly contested second half.
Sergio Garrido's two-point contribution—one goal and one assist—proved decisive for the visitors. Mississippi Col. drew four yellow cards while Montevallo received two. The Choctaws' superior efficiency in front of goal separated the teams in a competitive Division II matchup.
The loss dropped Montevallo to 5-4-7 following consecutive draws against Union (TN) and Delta State. Mississippi Col. continues its regional tournament push with the victory, improving to 11-1-4 and maintaining momentum in conference play.
