STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA – Penn State and eleventh-ranked Michigan battled to a scoreless draw Thursday night at Jeffrey Field, with goalkeepers Kris Daugherty and Noelle McDowell delivering stellar performances before 557 spectators in a match where neither team could solve the opposing defense.
Michigan controlled possession early, outshooting Penn State 15-9, but the Wolverines couldn't convert territorial advantage into goals. Alexia Adedokun tested Daugherty in the twenty-third minute with a dangerous strike from eighteen yards, but the Penn State goalkeeper dove sharply to his right to make a crucial save. The Nittany Lions responded five minutes later when Olivia Damico unleashed a powerful effort that sailed narrowly wide of McDowell's far post.
Michigan's Samantha Erbach, one of the conference's top scorers, found herself repeatedly frustrated by Penn State's organized defensive shape. The Wolverines' attacking tandem of Erbach and Adedokun created several promising opportunities but couldn't break through.
Penn State shifted to a more aggressive formation after halftime, immediately creating pressure. Maddie Ellinger forced McDowell into a diving save in the fifty-fifth minute with a well-struck shot from the edge of the penalty area. Michigan answered ten minutes later when Sydney Shepherd's curling attempt required another sharp stop from Daugherty.
Both goalkeepers finished with three saves apiece in matching shutout performances. Michigan enjoyed a 4-1 corner kick advantage, but Penn State's defensive unit, anchored by Emily Schillinger's tireless work rate, neutralized the Wolverines' set-piece threat.
The draw extends Michigan's unbeaten streak to two matches and improves their conference record to 6-2-2. Penn State (5-8-4, 2-7-1 Big Ten) earned a valuable point against a ranked opponent.
