SOUTH ORANGE, NEW JERSEY — Seton Hall advanced in the NCAA Division I Championship on Thursday after a 1-1 draw with Siena, winning the penalty shootout when Eric Svensson's attempt hit the crossbar after 110 minutes of play.
Agustin Resch broke the deadlock at 58:33, heading in a corner kick from Hugo Gerbore to give the Pirates the lead. The goal came 13 minutes into the second half following a scoreless opening period.
Siena refused to fold, equalizing in the 88th minute when Mario Navarro Perez headed home a corner kick from Eric Svensson, with Martin Piedeleu also earning an assist. The dramatic late goal forced two overtime periods that failed to produce a winner.
Seton Hall controlled territory, earning 14 corner kicks to Siena's three and outshooting the Saints 12-8. However, Siena goalkeeper Bennet Glinder made five crucial saves, including denying Nico Rubio in the 71st minute.
The penalty shootout saw both teams convert their opening attempts before Svensson's miss ended Siena's tournament run. Seton Hall improved to 7-3-8 overall, while Siena finished 9-5-5 after winning the MAAC Championship earlier in the week with consecutive overtime victories.
