DENVER — Denver defeated UC Irvine 2-0 on Thursday in NCAA Division I Championship action before 514 spectators, breaking through a scoreless first half with two quick second-half goals to secure victory.
Kyle McGowan opened the scoring in the 71st minute, assisted by Bryce Willoughby and Kai Carlson, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. Luke Schultz added an insurance goal three minutes later in the 74th minute, with Keegan Kelly and McGowan credited with assists, putting the match out of reach.
UC Irvine controlled much of the opening period, generating several opportunities through Travis Babineau, Brady Treinen, and Braden Ferreira, but Denver's defense remained organized and limited dangerous chances despite the Anteaters' territorial advantage.
Denver's shot efficiency proved decisive, converting two of three shots on goal while UC Irvine managed only two shots on target from 11 total attempts. The Pioneers also limited set-piece opportunities, conceding just three corner kicks.
UC Irvine entered riding a two-game winning streak in conference play with victories over Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara, but their inability to capitalize on first-half possession proved costly against a Denver side that extended its winning streak to three consecutive matches.
Denver advances to face eighth-ranked Portland on November 23 in NCAA Championship action.
