KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Florida State claimed the 2025 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship on Monday night, defeating top-ranked Stanford 1-0 on Wrianna Hudson's 87th-minute goal before 3,311 fans at CPKC Stadium.
Hudson's late strike capped a defensive masterclass from the third-seeded Seminoles, who weathered sustained pressure from the Cardinal throughout the 90 minutes. The sophomore forward pounced on a loose ball following a scramble in the box, finishing past Stanford's goalkeeper to give Florida State its first national title since 2021.
Stanford dominated possession and created numerous chances, outshooting Florida State 18-8 and putting nine shots on target compared to the Seminoles' three. But Florida State goalkeeper Addie Todd made nine saves to preserve the shutout, including critical stops on attempts from Eleanor Klinger, Jasmine Aikey and Charlotte Kohler.
The Seminoles' defensive organization frustrated Stanford's attack throughout the match. The Cardinal earned seven corner kicks to Florida State's four but couldn't convert their territorial advantage into goals. FSU's back line, marshaled by seniors Claire Rain and Nyanya Touray, stayed disciplined despite extended spells of defending.
Florida State finished the season 16-2-4, extending their winning streak to six matches. The Seminoles navigated a challenging NCAA tournament path that included victories over Samford (4-0), Lipscomb (1-0), second-ranked Georgetown (3-1), Ohio State (4-1), and second-ranked TCU (1-0) before Monday's championship triumph.
The championship run showcased FSU's tournament resilience. After a regular season that included losses to Notre Dame and Stanford, plus ties against Kansas, NC State and Virginia, the Seminoles peaked at the perfect time. They allowed just two goals across six NCAA tournament matches while scoring 14.
Jordynn Dudley, who led FSU with contributions throughout the season, drew a yellow card for unsporting conduct late in Monday's match as the Seminoles protected their lead. Stanford's Sophie Murdock received a caution in the first half in what became a physical but clean contest befitting a championship final.
The victory marked Florida State's redemption against Stanford after a 2-1 regular-season loss to the Cardinal on October 16 in Tallahassee. That defeat proved to be FSU's final loss of the season, as the Seminoles regrouped to finish strong in ACC play and then dominate the NCAA tournament.
For Stanford, the loss ended a dominant season that saw the Cardinal enter the championship as the nation's top-ranked team. Stanford had defeated Michigan State 5-1 and Duke 1-0 in earlier tournament rounds but couldn't solve Florida State's defensive setup when it mattered most.
Florida State's championship marked the program's third national title and first under head coach Brian Pensky. The Seminoles won previous titles in 2014 and 2021, establishing themselves as one of college soccer's elite programs.
The Seminoles' roster featured contributions from across all class years, with seniors Heather Gilchrist, Marianyela Jimenez and Kameron Simmonds providing veteran leadership while sophomores Hudson and Jaida McGrew delivered crucial moments throughout the tournament run.
Monday's victory capped a season that began with a 5-0 victory over Florida on August 14 and finished with the ultimate prize in college soccer.
