WASHINGTON, D.C. - American University extended their winning streak to four matches with a convincing 3-1 victory over Army West Point on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field. The Eagles (4-4-1) controlled much of the play against the Black Knights (3-2-4) in front of a spirited home crowd.

The scoring opened in dramatic fashion when Mustapha Sowe tested the Army defense with a shot in the 8th minute that sailed high. American continued to press, with Sebastian Garces creating another opportunity in the 22nd minute. The breakthrough finally came for American in the first half, setting the tone for what would become a high-scoring affair.

The first half saw both teams trading opportunities, with Army West Point showing resilience through Jack De Simone and Brantley Wigginton, who both registered shots in the 41st minute. The Black Knights' defensive unit, anchored by Riley Cullum, worked to contain American's aggressive attacking movements. The teams entered halftime with everything to play for.

The second half brought increased intensity and tactical adjustments from both sides. American's Oliver Snowdon created danger in the 68th minute with a shot that tested Army's defense. The Eagles' attack continued to find spaces, with Nicholas Beil nearly adding to the scoresheet in the 81st minute. Army showed fighting spirit late through Kelly Cooper, who had a promising attempt in the 88th minute.

Statistically, Army West Point managed nine shot attempts to American's seven, though the Eagles were more efficient with five shots on target compared to Army's three. The corner kick battle was closely contested, with American earning six corners to Army's five. Both goalkeepers recorded two saves in what proved to be a busy afternoon for the defensive units.

Individual performances shaped the match outcome, with Mustapha Sowe's early attacking presence setting the tone for American. Army's Miles Hadley showed tremendous work rate in midfield, while Sebastian Garces created consistent problems for the Black Knights' defense. The substitution patterns from both coaches proved crucial, with American making strategic changes to maintain their attacking momentum.

Tactically, American's approach focused on building through the wide areas, utilizing the speed of their wingers to stretch Army's defense. The Black Knights responded by trying to control the middle of the park, with Kasem Minzey and Jack Kryger working to disrupt American's passing rhythm. The Eagles' ability to maintain possession in key moments proved decisive in securing the victory.

This result continues American's impressive run of form, having now won four straight matches including victories over Loyola Maryland and UNCW. For Army West Point, the loss breaks a string of two consecutive draws and highlights areas for improvement as they return to conference play.

The match showcased American's growing confidence under pressure, with their attack proving too much for Army's typically sturdy defense. The Eagles' ability to convert their chances while limiting Army's opportunities in dangerous areas ultimately made the difference in what was an entertaining collegiate contest.

Both teams now turn their attention to midweek matches, with American traveling to face William & Mary on September 30, while Army West Point returns home to host Princeton on the same date. Both matches will be crucial as the teams look to build momentum heading into the heart of their conference schedules.
